Qualifications (New York State OCFS Requirements)
All candidates must meet New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) requirements.
Lead Teacher – Infant/Toddler
To qualify as an infant/toddler teacher, you must have one of the following:
- An associate’s degree in a related field plus one year of experience with infants/toddlers, or
- An infant/toddler credential plus two years of experience, or
- A CDA plus two years of experience (including infant/toddler care), or
- Nine college credits with a plan toward a credential plus two years of experience
Lead Teacher – Preschool (3–6 years)
To qualify as a preschool lead teacher, you must have one of the following:
- An associate’s degree in early childhood, child development, or a related field, or
- A Child Development Associate (CDA) credential (or equivalent) plus one year of experience, or
- Nine college credits in a related field with a plan to complete a credential/degree, plus two years of experience
Lead Teacher – School-Age (6–11 years)
To qualify as a school-age teacher, you must have one of the following:
- An associate’s degree in child development, education, recreation, or related field, or
- A school-age credential plus one year of experience, or
- A high school diploma plus two years of experience working with children under 13
Assistant Teacher (all classes)
To qualify as an assistant teacher, you must have:
- A high school diploma (or equivalent), or
- At least one year of experience working with children under 13 years old
